Cat Bordhi's class taught us that you can make knitting so that one side is completely clean looking while the other has traveling stitches, cables and all over craziness. The trick is to knit in one by one ribbing, but when you're going to town on the one side, make sure to keep the purl stitch in the middle without fussing with it.

She also had us play detective, where we all chose a swatch from her stack of probably almost 100, and we were to try and figure out which side was the "ride side," which direction was "up" and what was happening with the stitches to create the swatch. It took me nearly 2.5 hours, but I figured this one out, when I finally figured out that THIS was the correct side.
